Dr Michael Moran is a Senior Lecturer (Academic Specialist) in Social Enterprise in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, a Fellow at the Australian Welfare and Work Lab, and the Centre for Social Purpose Organisations at the Melbourne Business School. Prior to joining the University, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Social Impact (CSI) Swinburne University of Technology and National Education Director for the CSI network administered by the UNSW Sydney.

Mike is a political scientist whose research uses institutional theories from policy and organisational studies in exploring the institutions and actors in the social economy including charities and other not-for-profits (NFPs), philanthropy and charitable trusts ('private foundations'), and hybrid organisations, particularly social enterprises. He explores the relationship between these actors and the social service system and how this is shaped by policy, law and regulation. His current research focus is on resourcing dynamics - how organisations are funded and financed - including through blended social finance and impact investment; outcomes-based contracting in public sector commissioning, particularly social impact bonds, and the role of support programs (accelerators and incubators) in developing early-stage social enterprise.

To advance this program he works closely with organisations from across the philanthropic and NFP, public and private sectors and has been a chief investigator on grants and research contracts exceeding $2m.

Mike has published in leading journals including Public Administration Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Policy & Politics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management and Australian Journal of Public Administration and has served on the international advisory boards Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Quarterly and Policy & Politics.

His approach to teaching and learning is industry-focused and research-informed with the objective of bringing the practice and scholarship worlds together to ensure the best professional outcomes for students. As an industry-facing academic he brings this research-led teaching philosophy to the classroom and is an advocate of practice-oriented and experiential learning.

Mike completed his PhD in Public Policy and Administration at the University of Melbourne. An edited version of his thesis was published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis) in 2014 (paperback in 2017).
